Keep your current phone service active until the port is complete. Canceling early will release your number and make it unavailable for porting.

Pre-Porting Preparation
Complete these before starting the port request

Letter of Authorization (LOA)
Required documentation for the port request

Each carrier has their own LOA form - use the correct one

Must be signed by account holder or authorized contact

Leave no blanks - incomplete LOAs will be rejected

Sign and date the LOA

Signature must match the authorized user on the account

Include copy of valid ID

Some carriers require photo ID of the authorized signer

Keep a copy for your records

Store digitally for easy reference if issues arise

Plan the port to minimize disruption
Request port during low-traffic period

Avoid Monday mornings or month-end - schedule mid-week if possible

Let team know when brief service interruption may occur

Set up temporary forwarding (if possible)

Prepare your new system before the port completes

Verify everything works after port completes

Test voicemail functionality

Leave messages and retrieve them to confirm working

Verify fax lines (if applicable)

Listen for echo, latency, or audio issues

Confirm old service is cancelled

Verify with previous carrier to avoid double billing

Update marketing materials

If number changed, update website, business cards, ads

Common Porting Issues to Avoid

Account Name Mismatch

Name must match exactly as it appears on the bill - including Inc., LLC, etc.

Missing or Incorrect PIN

Contact your current carrier if you don't know your account PIN.

Pending Orders

Cancel any pending changes with your current carrier before porting.

Contract Restrictions

Some numbers can't be ported during an active contract period.
